Leading South African dairy producer Clover says it is testing product availability amid widespread looting in the country. The food chain is severely disrupted, with long queues for staples such as bread and milk in some parts of the country – including Durban and Soweto. Clover says it is investigating the impact of the looting on the availability of supplies. The dairy has been affected directly and indirectly in various parts of the country, but mainly in KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng. Food distribution was also affected by the closure of major highways (such as the N3 between Durban and Gauteng), while panic buying temporarily emptied some shelves in Gauteng.
